Maria G (Maria MG) 5 months ago⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Exchequer Restaurant & Pub — history, warmth, and great comfort food We stopped by Exchequer Restaurant & Pub in downtown Chicago after visiting the Art Institute, looking for a place to warm up, relax, and unwind. What we found was a true Chicago gem with real character and soul. This is not just a bar or restaurant — it’s a piece of history. Al Capone himself used to frequent this place, and you can feel that legacy everywhere. The walls are filled with stylish vintage photos, paintings, and original newspaper clippings from the Prohibition era. At the entrance, you’re even given a small booklet with the history of the pub, which immediately pulls you into the atmosphere of the time — such a thoughtful and unique touch. Special thanks to Niko the Greek, the bartender — incredibly friendly, open, and welcoming. He made us feel like regulars rather than first-time visitors. People like him truly bring a place to life. We ordered the chicken soup and the French onion soup, and they were exactly what we needed after a long museum visit — warm, comforting, flavorful, and satisfying. Perfect food to recharge on a cold day. Exchequer is the kind of place where: • history meets genuine coziness • food is simple but done right • the atmosphere feels authentic, not touristy We will absolutely be back. If you want to experience real Chicago, with its Prohibition-era stories, character, and charm — this place is a must-visit.
Sabrina Bone a month agoWe took a quick trip to Exchequer Restaurant & Pub and decided to stop in for lunch, easily one of the best decisions of our trip. From the moment we walked in, the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere felt warm, cozy, and comfortable, making it the perfect place to relax after exploring the city. The menu also had a great variety of options, so there’s truly something for everyone. My husband, my daughter’s boyfriend, and I ordered the Steak Frites with french fries, onion rings, and sweet potato fries, while my daughter chose the Mediterranean half slab with sweet potato fries. Everything was absolutely delicious. The steaks were cooked perfectly, the ribs were tender and practically fell off the bone, and the sauces paired beautifully with both dishes. If you’re visiting Chicago and looking for a welcoming spot with great food and generous portions, I would definitely recommend giving this place a try.
Ross Lewis 2 months agoThis was my first stop after dinner on a neighborhood bar crawl, so I didn't get to try the food, but really wish I did. Everything I saw bring served looked great. I had a few drinks at the bar just enjoying the atmosphere of a downtown Chicago bar/restaurant. Not a huge beer selection, but the bartender was nice and actually recommended the place next door for a bigger beer menu (I stopped in and reviewed that as well). I did find there entrance to the speakeasy, Club X, which was very cool and a totally different vibe than this bar. This was more restaurant than bar and looked like a great place for a family dinner outing or food and drinks after work.
Jill B 4 months agoReally cool restaurant/bar with lots of history. We had the Chicago deep dish pizza with sausage and Italian beef and Reuben sandwich with corned beef and waffle fries. They were both tasty but the pizza was amazing, so cheesy and just awesome. We had amber ale, espresso martinis and pomegranate martinis. All were great. Highly recommended, make sure to call in.
Halima Selmut 3 months agoThe classic speakeasy vibe really sets this place apart, with low lighting and historical details that create a relaxed, almost hidden atmosphere. It is the kind of spot that feels unique the moment you walk in, making it easy to settle in and enjoy the experience. Service was quick and friendly, and you can see why so many people become regulars here. The food and drinks feel high quality, yet the prices are surprisingly reasonable compared to similar places nearby. Overall, a great find and definitely a place worth stopping into again.
